  • Povidone-Iodine: Chemical Composition, Properties & Uses
    Povidone iodine is a complex of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and iodine. The iodine is bound to the PVP molecule through a covalent bond. The povidone iodine complex is a water-soluble, brown powder that is odorless and tasteless. It is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent that is effective against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa.

    Povidone iodine is used in a variety of medical applications, including:

    * Skin disinfection before surgery

    * Treatment of minor cuts and scrapes

    * Prevention of infection in burns

    * Treatment of fungal infections of the skin

    * Treatment of vaginal infections

    * Disinfection of medical instruments

    Povidone iodine is generally safe and well-tolerated. However, it can cause side effects such as skin irritation, itching, and burning. In rare cases, it can cause anaphylaxis.

    Povidone iodine should not be used by people who are allergic to iodine. It should also be avoided by people with thyroid problems, kidney disease, or liver disease.
