  • Zinc and Sulfuric Acid Reaction: Observations, Equation & Safety
    Reaction:

    $$Zn(s)+ H_2SO_4(aq) \rightarrow ZnSO_4(aq) + H_2(g)$$

    Observations:

    - The reaction is vigorous and exothermic, producing a lot of heat and hydrogen gas.

    - The zinc granules dissolve in the sulfuric acid, forming zinc sulfate solution.

    - Hydrogen gas escapes from the solution as bubbles.

    - The solution turns from colorless to pale green due to the formation of copper sulfate.

    Safety Precautions:

    - Sulfuric acid is corrosive and can cause severe burns. Wear protective clothing, gloves, and eye protection.

    - Hydrogen gas is flammable and can form explosive mixtures with air. Keep the reaction area well-ventilated.

    - Conduct the experiment in a fume hood or outdoors.
