  • Friable vs. Non-Friable Asbestos-Containing Materials (ACMs) - Risks & Examples
Asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) can be either friable or non-friable. Friable ACMs are materials that can be easily crumbled or reduced to a powder by hand pressure. Non-friable ACMs are materials that are not easily crumbled or reduced to a powder by hand pressure. Friable ACMs pose a greater health risk than non-friable ACMs because they are more likely to release asbestos fibers into the air when disturbed. Some examples of friable ACMs include:

    1). Asbestos-containing insulation

    2). Asbestos-containing ceiling tiles

    3). Asbestos-containing floor tiles

    4). Asbestos-containing pipe insulation

    5). Asbestos-containing joint compound

    Examples of non-friable ACMs include:

    1). Asbestos-containing roofing shingles

    2). Asbestos-containing siding

    3). Asbestos-containing cement pipe

    4). Asbestos-containing floor tiles

    5). Asbestos-containing mastic.
