    When atoms of two or more elements bond, they form a compound. A compound is a substance that contains two or more elements chemically combined in fixed proportions by mass. The properties of a compound are different from the properties of the individual elements that make it up. For example, water is a compound that is made up of hydrogen and oxygen. Water has different properties than hydrogen or oxygen.
