  • Understanding Chloroform Bonds: Covalent Structure & Geometry
Chloroform has the chemical formula $CHCl_3$. In a chloroform molecule, carbon forms covalent bonds with four atoms—four single bonds that form the tetrahedron shape associated with carbon that has four single bonds. Three of those bonds link carbon to chlorine atoms ($C-Cl$ bonds), while the fourth links carbon to a hydrogen atom ($C-H$ bond).

Therefore, carbon has four \(sp^3\) covalent bonds, which have tetrahedral geometry.
