The state of matter in which molecules are very close together is called a solid. In a solid, the molecules are held together by strong intermolecular forces, such as covalent bonds or ionic bonds. This causes the molecules to be packed tightly together, with very little space between them. As a result, solids have a definite shape and volume, and they are not easily deformed.
