The Scottish chemist James Young patented a process for extracting kerosene from coal in 1847, but it was American entrepreneur Samuel Kier who first commercialised kerosene in 1857. Kier had been refining petroleum since the 1840s, and he began selling kerosene as a lamp oil in 1857.
