  • Understanding pH Changes in Acid-Base Reactions: Increase or Decrease?
The pH of a solution decreases when an acid reacts with a base.

Acids donate H+ ions to a solution, while bases remove H+ ions from a solution. When an acid and a base react, the H+ ions from the acid combine with the hydroxide ions (OH-) from the base to form water (H2O). This reaction reduces the concentration of H+ ions in the solution, which causes the pH to increase.
