  • What is a Solvent? Definition & Examples
A substance that dissolves other substances and is present in greater amount is called a solvent. In a solution, the solvent is the component that is present in the greatest proportion and that dissolves the other components, which are called solutes. The solvent is usually a liquid, but can also be a gas or a solid. For example, in a solution of salt water, the solvent is water and the solute is salt.
