  • Ionic vs. Covalent Bonding: Understanding HCl
HCl is an example of a covalent bond.

In a covalent bond, atoms share electrons in order to achieve a stable electron configuration. In the case of HCl, the hydrogen atom shares one electron with the chlorine atom, and the chlorine atom shares one electron with the hydrogen atom. This results in both atoms having a full outer electron shell, which makes the bond between them very strong.
