- Formula. The formula of an ionic compound consists of the symbols of the constituent ions, written in the simplest whole-number ratio of positive to negative charges. - Solubility. Ionic compounds are typically soluble in polar solvents, such as water. - Crystal structure. Ionic compounds typically form a crystal lattice, in which the positive and negative ions are arranged in a regular, repeating pattern. This crystal structure gives ionic compounds their characteristic properties, such as hardness and high melting point.
- Chemical properties:
* Ionic compounds generally react with water to form an acidic or basic solution. For example, sodium chloride reacts with water to form a neutral solution, sodium hydroxide reacts with water to form a basic solution, and hydrochloric acid reacts with water to form an acidic solution.
* Ionic compounds generally react with metals to form new compounds. For example, sodium chloride reacts with iron to form iron(II) chloride and sodium metal.
- Physical properties:
* Ionic compounds are typically hard and brittle solids.
* Ionic compounds have high melting points and boiling points.
* Ionic compounds are typically soluble in water and other polar solvents.
* Ionic compounds can conduct electricity when they are dissolved in water or melted.
