  • Beta Emission: Changes in Nucleus and Particle Emission Explained
If an isotope undergoes beta emission, the number of protons in the nucleus increases by one, while the number of neutrons decreases by one. This is because a beta particle (which is essentially an electron) is emitted from the nucleus, taking with it a negative charge and no mass. As a result, the overall charge of the nucleus increases by one unit, converting a neutron into a proton.
