  • Understanding Equilibrium in Acid Ionization Reactions
The equilibrium arrows are used in the ionization equations for some acids because the ionization of acids is a reversible process. This means that the acid can both donate a proton (H+) to form a hydronium ion (H3O+) and accept a proton from a water molecule to form the conjugate base. The position of the equilibrium between the acid and its conjugate base depends on the strength of the acid.
