  • Safe Handling of Zirconium Powder: Risks & Best Practices
Zirconium is a highly reactive metal that can easily catch fire. Zirconium powder is more dangerous than bulk metal because it has a larger surface area and is therefore more easily oxidized. It must be handled with great care to avoid:

    - explosion caused by friction or impact.

    - fire in the presence of air or certain other sources of oxygen.

Here are some tips for handling fine zirconium powder:

    - Store the powder in a cool, dry place, away from any potential ignition sources.

    - If possible, store zirconium powder in an inert gas atmosphere (<5 ppm of oxygen).

    - When handling the powder, wear gloves, eye, and respiratory protection to prevent contact with the skin, eyes, and lungs.

    - Avoid creating dust when handling zirconium powder.

    - If the powder catches on fire, immediately extinguish the fire with a dry powder or CO2 fire extinguisher.

-Never use water to extinguish a zirconium fire.

    - Dispose of zirconium powder according to local regulations.
