  • Suspensions vs. Pure Substances: Understanding the Difference
A suspension is not a pure substance.

A pure substance is a substance that has a definite and uniform chemical composition throughout. A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture of particles that are suspended in a liquid, gas, or solid. The particles in a suspension are large enough to scatter light, so that the suspension appears cloudy or opaque. Suspensions can be formed when solid particles are added to a liquid or when a gas is bubbled through a liquid.
