Solid sodium chloride (NaCl), also known as table salt, does not conduct an electrical current. An electrical current requires mobile charged particles called ions to flow freely through a material. While NaCl dissolves in water to form dissociated Na+ and Cl- ions, which can conduct electricity in solution, solid NaCl lacks sufficient freedom of movement for its ions to facilitate significant electrical conduction. Instead, solid NaCl primarily functions as an insulating material.
