  • The Origin of Oxygen in Water (H2O): A Photosynthesis Explanation
The oxygen atom in H2O comes from the atmosphere. During the process of photosynthesis, plants absorb carbon dioxide and water from the atmosphere and use sunlight to convert them into glucose and oxygen. The oxygen that is produced as a byproduct of photosynthesis is released into the atmosphere, where it can be used by animals and other organisms for respiration.
