  • Phase Changes & Temperature: Understanding Latent Heat
The temperature of a substance does not change as it undergoes a phase change, for example when melting or boiling. The energy needed for transformation to another state (phase) is used to overcome attractive forces, not raise temperature. This energy, called latent heat, causes a change in state at constant temperature.
