  • Petroleum Ether and Vegetable Oil Solubility: A Scientific Explanation
Petroleum ether is a mixture of low molecular weight hydrocarbons, primarily pentanes and hexanes. It is a nonpolar solvent. Vegetable oils are composed primarily of triglycerides, which are fatty acid esters of glycerol. Triglycerides are nonpolar molecules. Because "like dissolves like," petroleum ether will dissolve vegetable oil.
