  • Atomic Number: Understanding Protons and Element Identity
The number of protons in an atom is equal to its atomic number. The atomic number of an element is a unique number that identifies that element and is used to order the elements on the periodic table. The atomic number of an element is also equal to the number of electrons in a neutral atom of that element.
