Acid-Base Reactions: Understanding the Simplest Proton Transfer
The simplest type of acid-base reaction is a proton transfer reaction. In this type of reaction, an acid donates a proton (H+) to a base. The general form for this type of reaction is:
HA + B → A- + HB+
where:
* HA is the acid
* B is the base
* A- is the conjugate base of the acid
* HB+ is the conjugate acid of the base
This type of reaction is also known as a neutralization reaction.
