  • Alkyl Halides: Basicity & Acidity Explained | Chemistry Concepts
Alkyl halides are neither basic nor acidic in nature. They are neutral compounds.

The acidic or basic character of a compound depends on its ability to donate or accept protons(H+ ions). Alkyl halides do not have any acidic hydrogen atoms that can be donated as protons or any lone pair of electrons that can accept protons.

However, in the presence of polar solvents such as water, alkyl halides can undergo hydrolysis reactions where they react with water molecules to form alcohols and hydrohalic acids. The alkyl halide acts as a weak electrophile and reacts with the nucleophilic oxygen atom of water in a substitution reaction.
