  • Tungsten Discovery: A History of Carl Wilhelm Scheele's Find
The discovery of tungsten is often credited to the Swedish chemist and mineralogist Carl Wilhelm Scheele in 1781. The discovery occurred during a series of experiments Scheele conducted to investigate a mineral known as wolframite. Scheele chemically analyzed wolframite and realized it contained a new element. Although he did not isolate metallic tungsten, he named the new element "tungsten" from the Swedish words "tung" and "sten" meaning heavy stone. It wasn't until 1783 that two independent Spanish chemists, the brothers Juan José and Fausto Elhuyar, succeeded in isolating metallic tungsten.
