  • Iron(II) and Iron(III) Chloride: Properties and Uses
Iron can form two compounds with chlorine: iron(II) chloride (FeCl2) and iron(III) chloride (FeCl3).

Iron(II) chloride is a white or pale green crystalline solid that is soluble in water. It is a reducing agent and is used in the production of other iron compounds, as a mordant in dyeing, and as a flux in soldering.

Iron(III) chloride is a dark brown or black crystalline solid that is soluble in water. It is an oxidizing agent and is used as an etchant in the production of printed circuit boards, as a coagulant in water treatment, and as a catalyst in various chemical reactions.
