  • Understanding Hydrogen Bonding: The Role of Electronegativity
    The most important characteristic of a molecule for hydrogen bonding is the presence of a highly electronegative atom, such as oxygen, nitrogen, or fluorine, bonded to a hydrogen atom. This electronegative atom attracts the electron cloud of the hydrogen atom, creating a partially positive charge on the hydrogen atom. This partial positive charge is then able to interact with the partial negative charge on another electronegative atom, forming a hydrogen bond.
