  • Understanding Methane Bonding: The Role of Van der Waals Forces
    Van der Waals forces

Methane is a nonpolar molecule, so it does not have any permanent dipole-dipole attractions. However, the electrons in the methane molecules are constantly moving, which creates temporary dipoles. These temporary dipoles can induce dipoles in neighboring molecules, resulting in van der Waals forces. Van der Waals forces are relatively weak, but they are the only forces of attraction between methane molecules.
