  • Net Ionic Charge in Compounds: Understanding the Rule
In an ionic compound, the net ionic charge must be zero. This means that the total positive charge of the cations must be equal to the total negative charge of the anions. For example, in sodium chloride (NaCl), the sodium ion has a +1 charge and the chloride ion has a -1 charge. Since there is one sodium ion and one chloride ion in each formula unit of NaCl, the net ionic charge is zero.
