  • Ionic Conductivity: Why Molten Salts Conduct Electricity
    Ionic substances can conduct electricity when melted because the ions are no longer held in a fixed lattice structure. When an electric field is applied, the ions are free to move and carry the current.

    In contrast, ionic substances are poor conductors of electricity when they are in a solid state. This is because the ions are held in a rigid lattice structure and cannot move.
