  • Understanding Heat Transfer: Why Metal Spoons Get Hot
    When you place a metal spoon in a pot of boiling water, it gets hot because of a process called heat transfer. Heat transfer is the movement of thermal energy from one object to another. In this case, the heat energy is transferred from the boiling water to the metal spoon.

    * Radiation is the transfer of heat energy through electromagnetic waves. In the case of the metal spoon, the heat energy is transferred from the boiling water to the metal spoon through radiation. The boiling water emits infrared radiation, which is a type of electromagnetic wave that can be felt as heat.

    All three of these mechanisms contribute to the transfer of heat energy from the boiling water to the metal spoon. As a result, the metal spoon gets hot.
