  • Neutralization Reactions: What Happens When Acids and Bases Mix?
    Acids react with bases to form a neutral solution. When an acid and a base are mixed in the right amounts, the hydrogen ions from the acid and the hydroxide ions from the base combine to form water. This process is called neutralization. The resulting solution is neither acidic nor basic, and is said to be neutral.

    For example, when hydrochloric acid (HCl) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) are mixed in the right amounts, the following reaction occurs:

    ```
    HCl + NaOH -> NaCl + H2O
    ```

    The products of this reaction are sodium chloride (NaCl) and water (H2O). Sodium chloride is a salt, and water is a neutral compound. Therefore, the resulting solution is neutral.
