  • Reaction of Carbonates with Hydrochloric Acid: Chloride Salt Formation
The salt that will be made when any carbonate reacts with hydrochloric acid is a chloride salt. For example:

    $$Na_2CO_3 + 2HCl \rightarrow 2NaCl + H_2O + CO_2$$

In this reaction, sodium carbonate reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce sodium chloride, water, and carbon dioxide gas. The chloride salt is named by taking the name of the metal cation (in this case, sodium) and adding the suffix "-chloride."
