The main sources of SO2 and NOx emissions are;
1. Coal-fired power plants
2. Industrial facilities, such as factories and refineries
3. Diesel vehicles, including trucks, buses, and ships.
4. The burning of fossil fuels releases these pollutants into the air, where they react with oxygen and water vapor to form acids, such as sulfuric acid and nitric acid. These acids then mix with raindrops or other forms of precipitation, resulting in acid rain.
Some of the significant contributors to acid rain include;
a) Power plants that use coal or oil as fuel. As they burn, they emit large amounts of SO2 and NOx into the atmosphere.
b) Industrial processes, especially those that involve burning fuels, like smelting, refining, and manufacturing. They release SO2, NOx, and other pollutants.
c) Vehicles that run on diesel or gasoline emit NOx when they burn fuel. Diesel vehicles contribute more to NOx emissions than gasoline-powered ones.
d) Residential heating systems that use fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, or natural gas, also release SO2 and NOx.
