    The safe level of chlorine in drinking water is less than 4 parts per million (ppm). Levels of chlorine above 4 ppm can cause health problems, such as stomach cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea. In some cases, high levels of chlorine can also cause respiratory problems and skin irritation.
