  • The Origin of Helium's Chemical Symbol (He) - A Historical Perspective
The chemical symbol for helium (He) is derived from the Greek word "Helios," which means sun. Helium was first discovered in 1868 by the French astronomer Pierre Janssen during a solar eclipse. Janssen observed a bright yellow line in the Sun's spectrum that did not match any known elements on Earth. He named the new element "helium" after the Greek god of the sun, Helios.
