  • Poison Sumac Treatment: Relief from Itching & Rash
    1. Wash the affected area with cool water and mild soap as soon as possible. This will help remove any residual urushiol oil, the allergen that causes the rash.

    2. Apply a cold compress to the affected area to help relieve itching and inflammation.

    3. Take an oral antihistamine, such as Benadryl or Claritin, to help relieve itching.

    4. Apply a topical corticosteroid cream or ointment, such as hydrocortisone or cortisone, to help reduce inflammation and itching.

    5. Wear loose, comfortable clothing over the affected area to help prevent further irritation.

    6. If the rash is severe or does not improve after a few days, you may need to see a doctor. They may prescribe oral corticosteroids or other medications to help treat the symptoms.

    8. Avoid scratching the rash. This can make it worse and could lead to infection.

    9. Keep the affected area clean and dry. This will help reduce the risk of infection.

    10. Call poison control for advice if you have any worries, especially regarding children and anyone showing the rash near their sensitive body areas - eyes, genitals.
