  • Understanding Landfills: Waste Management & Processes
    Step 1: Waste Collection

The first step in the landfill process is waste collection. Waste is collected from homes, businesses, and other sources and transported to the landfill in garbage trucks.

    Step 2: Waste Sorting

Once the waste arrives at the landfill, it is sorted. Recyclable materials, such as paper, plastic, and metal, are removed from the waste stream and sent to recycling plants. The remaining waste is sent to the landfill.

    Step 3: Waste Compaction

The waste is then compacted using heavy machinery. This reduces the volume of the waste and makes it easier to store.

    Step 4: Landfill Cell Construction

Landfills are divided into cells. Each cell is lined with a impermeable liner to prevent the waste from contaminating the groundwater. The liner is usually made of a thick layer of clay or plastic.

    Step 5: Waste Placement

The waste is placed in the landfill cell and compacted further. The landfill cell is then covered with a daily cover of soil or other material to help control odors and pests.

    Step 6: Landfill Gas Collection

Landfills produce methane gas as the waste decomposes. This gas is collected and used to generate electricity or heat buildings.

    Step 7: Landfill Closure

When a landfill cell is full, it is closed and capped with a layer of soil or other material. The landfill is then monitored for a period of time to ensure that it is not leaking any contaminants.

    Step 8: Landfill Aftercare

Landfills require aftercare for a period of time after they are closed. This aftercare includes monitoring the landfill for leaks, maintaining the cover, and controlling erosion.
