  • Create a Simple Working Heart Model for Classroom Science

By Kelly Sundstrom • Updated March 24, 2022

Understanding how the heart pumps blood becomes tangible when children can see a working model in action. This hands‑on demonstration uses everyday items—such as a hot water bottle—to illustrate the cardiovascular system in a clear, engaging way.

    Step 1

Fill a hot water bottle three‑quarters full with water.

    Step 2

Add ten drops of red food coloring to the bottle.

    Step 3

Insert a clear plastic tube into the bottle’s opening.

    Step 4

Secure the tube with duct tape to prevent leakage.

    Step 5

Squeeze the bottle. The pressure mimics the heart’s pumping action, forcing the colored water through the tube—just as blood travels through veins and capillaries.

    Things Needed

    • Hot water bottle
    • Water
    • Duct tape
    • Clear plastic tube
    • Red food coloring

This simple, safe model provides an effective visual aid for teaching the basics of cardiovascular physiology.
