    For decades, humans have been viewed as the sole masters of language, a sophisticated system acquired through social interaction rather than innate programming. Recent research, however, challenges this notion by revealing striking parallels between human speech and the vocalizations of humpback whales.

    Male humpback whales produce complex songs that can last more than thirty minutes. These melodies are not genetically predetermined; instead, they emerge through a learning process that begins when the whales are juveniles and evolves over years. While females also vocalize, their patterns remain less studied, and scientists suspect that the primary function of these songs—often heard during the breeding season—is to attract mates or assert dominance.

    In a February 2025 issue of the journal Science, researchers announced that humpback whale language acquisition follows a statistical rule familiar to linguists: Zipf’s law of frequency. This law describes how the most common word in a language occurs roughly twice as often as the next most frequent word, three times as often as the third, and so on for the most frequently used terms.

    Zipf’s Law Explained

    According to Zipf’s law, in English the word the appears in about one out of every ten words, while of appears in about one out of every twenty. The humpback study applied the same framework to eight years of acoustic data, identifying recurring sound combinations—analogous to words—that adhered to this frequency distribution.

    The researchers found that the most common sound motifs in a population of humpbacks occurred approximately twice as often as the second most common, mirroring the pattern observed in human languages.     These findings suggest that juvenile humpbacks, much like human children, internalize an organizational structure that facilitates language learning. Remarkably, this similarity persists despite the fact that whales and humans share a common ancestor that lived over a hundred million years ago.
