    Tomatoes develop cracks when the fruit’s interior swells faster than its skin can expand. This typically happens after a dry spell followed by a sudden, heavy rain or over‑watering. The rapid influx of water forces the fruit’s flesh to expand, creating tension that tears the epidermis.

    To keep your homegrown tomatoes intact, maintain a steady watering schedule. In dry periods, hand‑water or use drip irrigation to supply consistent moisture. Adding organic compost improves soil’s water‑holding capacity, reducing the shock of sudden rainfall. In regions with erratic weather, cover plants with a breathable tarp during intense storms to shield them from abrupt water surges.

    Understanding the Types of Tomato Cracks

    Concentric cracking occurs when the skin splits horizontally around the stem‑fruit junction, forming ring‑like patterns. These shallow fissures rarely allow pests or diseases to penetrate the fruit.

    Radial cracking runs vertically from the stem down the side of the tomato. These deeper cuts expose the flesh to bacteria, fungi, and insect threats such as the tomato hornworm. Radial cracks can quickly lead to rot if the fruit remains on the vine.

    When you spot a cracked tomato, harvest it promptly. If you notice mold, a sour odor, or visible rot, discard it—consumption is unsafe. Otherwise, cracked tomatoes are usually safe to eat; just be mindful of any additional moisture loss.
