While trees are often thought of as the main oxygen producers, phytoplankton, microscopic marine algae, are responsible for producing about half of the oxygen in Earth's atmosphere through photosynthesis. They are incredibly efficient at converting sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water into oxygen and energy.
