  • Animal Sperm Cell Function: Fertilization Process Explained
    The function of an animal sperm cell is to fertilize an egg cell. This is achieved through the following steps:

    * Travel to the egg: Sperm cells are highly mobile and use their flagella (tail-like structures) to swim towards the egg cell. This journey can be challenging, requiring them to navigate through the female reproductive tract.

    * Penetration of the egg: Once a sperm cell reaches the egg, it binds to the outer layer of the egg and releases enzymes that break down the egg's protective coating. This allows the sperm to penetrate the egg.

    * Fusion of nuclei: The sperm cell's nucleus, containing half of the genetic material necessary for a new organism, fuses with the egg cell's nucleus, which also contains half of the genetic material. This fusion creates a fertilized egg, or zygote, containing a full set of chromosomes.

    Therefore, the sperm cell's primary function is to deliver its genetic material to the egg cell, initiating the process of fertilization and the development of a new individual.
