  • Small Intestine: Your Body's Nutrient Absorption Powerhouse
The organ responsible for food and water absorption is the small intestine.

    Here's why:

    * Structure: The small intestine is a long, narrow tube with a large surface area thanks to folds, villi, and microvilli. This structure maximizes the contact between digested food and the intestinal wall.

    * Digestive Enzymes: The small intestine produces enzymes that further break down food into smaller molecules.

    * Absorption: The small intestine absorbs nutrients (like carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals) and water into the bloodstream.

While the stomach plays a role in digestion, it primarily focuses on breaking down food mechanically and chemically. The large intestine absorbs water and electrolytes, but its primary function is to form and store waste.
