Central Nervous System (CNS):
* Brain: The control center of the body, responsible for thoughts, emotions, memory, and controlling most bodily functions.
* Spinal Cord: A long, thin bundle of nerves that extends from the brain down the back. It carries messages between the brain and the rest of the body.
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS):
* Nerves: Bundles of fibers that carry messages between the CNS and the rest of the body. These can be further divided into:
* Cranial Nerves: 12 pairs of nerves that originate from the brain and control sensory functions (sight, hearing, taste, smell), motor functions (muscle movement), and autonomic functions (heart rate, digestion).
* Spinal Nerves: 31 pairs of nerves that originate from the spinal cord and control sensory and motor functions in the body.
* Ganglia: Collections of nerve cell bodies located outside the CNS, which act as relay stations for nerve signals.
Important Note: While these are the main organs, the nervous system also includes a variety of specialized cells, such as neurons, glial cells, and neurotransmitters.
