  • Red Blood Cells (Erythrocytes): Structure and Function
    That blood cell is called a red blood cell, or erythrocyte.

    Here's why:

    * No nucleus: Red blood cells lose their nucleus during development to maximize space for hemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen.

    * Biconcave disc shape: This shape increases the surface area of the cell, allowing for more efficient oxygen uptake and release.
