  • Xylem: The Plant's Water and Nutrient Transport System
The structure that transports water and nutrients from the roots to the rest of the plant is called the xylem.

    Here's how it works:

    * Xylem is a type of vascular tissue that forms a network of tubes throughout the plant.

    * Water and dissolved minerals are absorbed by the roots and enter the xylem.

    * The xylem vessels are made of dead cells that have been joined end to end, forming a continuous, hollow tube.

    * Capillary action and transpiration (the evaporation of water from the leaves) create a pressure gradient that pulls water up the xylem from the roots.

Think of the xylem as a series of straws that deliver water and nutrients from the roots to the leaves and other parts of the plant.
