  • Cell Division: What Changes When a Cell Splits?
When a cell divides into two smaller cells, the following things increase:

    * Number of cells: This is the most obvious increase. You start with one cell and end up with two.

    * Surface area to volume ratio: While each individual cell gets smaller, the total surface area of the cells increases because you now have two cells instead of one. This is important because it allows for more efficient exchange of nutrients and waste products.

    * Number of organelles: Depending on the type of cell division, the daughter cells may inherit some organelles from the parent cell, or they may need to synthesize new organelles to function properly.

    * Number of chromosomes: During mitosis, the number of chromosomes doubles before the cell divides, so each daughter cell receives a full complement of chromosomes.
