  • Glycogen Storage in the Human Body: Liver & Muscles Explained
Glycogen is primarily stored in two locations in the human body:

    * Liver: The liver stores about 80% of the body's glycogen. This glycogen is readily available to be broken down into glucose and released into the bloodstream when blood sugar levels drop. This helps maintain a stable blood sugar level and provides energy for the body's tissues.

    * Muscles: Muscles store about 20% of the body's glycogen. This glycogen is used primarily by the muscles themselves for energy during exercise.

While these are the main locations, glycogen can also be found in smaller amounts in other tissues like the brain, kidneys, and heart.
