  • Robert Hooke and the Discovery of Cells: A Microscopic Breakthrough
    Robert Hooke first saw cells under a microscope.

    He didn't actually see living cells, but rather the empty cell walls of dead plant cells from a thin slice of cork. He thought they looked like tiny rooms, and so he named them "cells" after the small rooms monks lived in.
