  • Competent Cells: Understanding Bacterial DNA Uptake
A bacterial cell that has taken up plasmid DNA is called a competent cell.

    Here's why:

    * Competence refers to a state where bacteria are able to take up foreign DNA from their environment. This is a naturally occurring process but can also be induced in the lab using specific techniques.

    * Plasmids are small, circular DNA molecules that replicate independently of the bacterial chromosome. They often carry genes that provide bacteria with advantageous traits, like antibiotic resistance.

    * Transformation is the process by which bacteria take up foreign DNA.

So, when a bacterial cell takes up plasmid DNA, it becomes competent and has undergone transformation. This allows the bacteria to express the genes carried by the plasmid, providing them with new abilities.
