  • Defining Living Organisms: Characteristics & Life Processes
    Anything that can perform life processes by itself is called a living organism.

    Here's why:

    * Life processes include things like:

    * Growth: Increasing in size and complexity

    * Reproduction: Creating offspring

    * Metabolism: Chemical reactions that sustain life

    * Response to stimuli: Reacting to changes in the environment

    * Homeostasis: Maintaining a stable internal environment

    * Organization: Being made up of cells or having a specific structure

    * By itself means that the organism can carry out these processes independently, without relying on other organisms.

    Therefore, a living organism is a self-sustaining entity that exhibits all the characteristics of life.
